fellow - country man of yours,"(to most

Japanese all foreigners are English,) " the

 celebrated hanashika, Mr. B..." " And

where is he ? I cried wildly. " He

went away, Sir, yesterday." In could not

ascertain in what direction. Some months

afterwards I happened to be at Kobe, a

large town about 376 miles from the

capital. After dinner I was strolling through

the picturesque and crowded streets of that

liveley port, when suddenly, passing before

a yosè, I caught sight of the portrait of

my evasive friend, conspicuous among

many others on the enormous poster.

He was to recite that evening. Every

minute the crowd at the door grew

　ホテルの従業員が部屋を見せて言うには、「お客様、この部屋はあなたと同じお国の方がお泊りになっていました」（ほとんどの日本人にとって外国人といえば英国人のことなのだが）、「著名な噺家である某B様で」「で、彼はどこにいる？」わたしは大声で叫んだ。「かれは昨日お発ちになられました、お客様」。どちらへ向かったかは確かめることはできなかった。

　数カ月後、わたしは神戸にいた。そこは首都から376マイル離れた大きな街である。夕食後、わたしは活気ある港町の絵のように美しくにぎやかな通りを散歩していた。ある寄席の前を通り過ぎたとき突然に、巨大な看板のなかで誰よりもひときわ目立って、わたしから逃げ回っているかのような友人の似顔絵が目に入ったのだった。彼はその晩、高座に上がることになっていた。刻々とドアの前の人だかりはこくなっていき、

　はじめて見るような単語も多く、ひとつひとつ調べてみるも、意味が今ひとつ？いつもながら文章全体の流れをつかんで、意味がよくわからない部分にあう訳を当てはめ埋めてゆくような作業を繰り返しました。
