nasai (Deign to accept).' You are not

offered tea to prevent you from sleeping

through the most interesting performance,

which is about to take place (that would

be indecorous to the last degree), but

simply because it is the custom, as every-

one drinks tea, and you would be thought

an eccentric person, if you refused.

（大意）

　あなたはこれから行われる、ある程度不適切なところがあるかもしれないが、もっとも興味深い演芸の最中に居眠りをしてしまわないように、お茶が供されるのではない。簡単に言ってしまえば、単に習慣なのだ。多くの人たちがお茶を飲んでいるときにあなただけがもし断れば、あなたは風変わりな人だとおもわれるだろう。

（補足）

　地元の名士風の人や、ちょんまげ姿の人もいますし、特にご婦人方はお化粧をしてるのか、顔がことのほか白くなっています。日本髪も美しい。

　座敷席ならではのにぎやかさです。
