Often they are summoned to the houses

of rich persons, who desire to give their

guests a particular treat; in such a case

they receive from three to ten yen for their

performance.

 I will conclude this short study of the

hanashika with a curious fact. This as-

sociation of artists includes among its mem-

bers 一 you would scaresly believe it一an

Englishman, Mr.B. ....;how he came

to Japan no-one knows. He is always

moving from one important town to an-

other; his name heads the bills of the

best yosè; he has married a woman of the

country, by whom he has several children,

and has given up entirely his European

habits in order to adopt the Japanese

　彼らのそれぞれの寄席での契約は、一晩に５，６ヶ所の高座に上がるのであるが、２週間をこえることはない。しばしば噺家たちは金持ちの家に招かれ、かれらの招待客に特別な出し物をすることを求められることがあり、そのような場合でも噺家たちが受け取る報酬は3円から10円である。

　わたしは最後にとても興味を引く事実をもって、この短い噺家の研究をしめくくりたいとおもう。

　この芸術家協会の中に、あなたはとても信じられないであろうが、英国人某B氏がいる。かれがどのように日本にやって来たのか知っている人は誰もいない。かれはいつも主要な街を転々としている。大きな寄席の演目のトップに名を連ねている。日本の女性と結婚し子どもを数人もうけ、日本の生活様式に慣れ親しむようヨーロッパの習慣は完全に断ち切っている。

「 Mr.B. ....」、快楽亭ブラックのこと。中表紙見返しの寄席入口の２階の看板に「英國人ブラツク」とあります。『落語家＿懐かしき人たち』という本にブラック自身の当時の落語界にたいする考えがのっています。　

　ブラックのお墓は横浜外人墓地にあるらしいです。
