A second zenza takes his place, followed

by a second interlude, and so the pro-

gram proceeds. Towards ten o'clock the

shin-uchi comes, bows with the assurance

of a man, who knows his audience,

and begins his story. He modulates

his voice to suit the incidents and passes

from laughter to tears, from emphasis to

fury, according to the characters,whom

he represents and with whom for the

moment he is identified.Every class in

society with its virtues and its vices 一

especially, its vices 一encounters his criticism,

and mothers-in-law come off as badly as in

other countries. His storics are generally

very long and occupy ten, twenty, some-

times thirty performances. Often his com-

ments verge on impropriety and he lays

stress on risky scenes, knowing that his

audience delights in and expects them.

　代わって、二人目の前座が登場し、二度目の幕間が続き、そのようにして出し物は進行してゆく。10時になる頃、真打ちが登場し聴衆に一瞥をくれると、堂々とした所作でお辞儀をし、はなしをはじめる。

　彼は噺の出来事にあわせて、滑稽なことから悲しい感情まで声の調子をかえ、また噺に出てくる人物の性格に応じて、さらにあるときには登場人物にすっかりなりきって、表情や感情を強調してみたり怒りを爆発させてみたりする。

　社会のあらゆる階層には美徳と悪徳があり、特に悪徳はかれの噺の舌鋒の的となる。そして継母は他のどこの国でもおなじように、ひどい目に合うこととなる。

彼の噺は概して大変に長い。10回20回ときには30回にも及ぶ。しばしば彼の話しぶりは無作法になったりもする。彼は観客がどうしたら喜んだり、何を期待しているのかを知っているので、きわどいところではそのような緊張感を持つよう仕向けているのである。

（補足）

　テレビで現在寄席を定期的に放送しているのは、チバテレビの「浅草お茶の間寄席」くらいだろうか。ついさきごろまでTVKで放送されていたのを見ていたが、室内アンテナにしたので見ることができなくなってしまいました。

　地デジで見ることができるようにどこかの局で放映してくれないかな。
