the gift of some local Macaenas, who wishes

to be talked about, since his name is

embroidered on it in large letters, that

everyone as well as the recipient, be he

artist or impresario, may know of his

generosity. Close to the Platform is a

hibachi, or small brazier, indispensable and

ubiquitous, supporting on its ardent coals

a copper kettle, or yakan. Directly you

have settled down in your place, one of

the numerous naka-uri* approaches and

smilingly prostrates herself at your feet;

then offers you a velvet or leather

cushion according to the season and a

tabakobon, in which you will find a small

porcelain edition of the hibachi, serving to

light your pipe; and a tiny bamboo tube,

which answers the purpose of a spittoon.

Gently and gracefully she offers you a

cup of tea with the words, 'O-agan-

 * Waiter, mostly female.

（大意）

　そののれんは地元の後援者の贈り物で、自分の名前を大きな文字でのれんに刺繍して、知ってもらおうと願っているのである。贈られた者だけでなくたくさんの人たち、また芸人や興行主は後援者のその気持ちをよく理解している。

　台のそばにはヒバチもしくは小さい火鉢があり、欠くことのできぬどこにでもあるものである。火鉢の中の真っ赤な炭の上には銅製のやかんがのっている。

　自分の席に腰を下ろすとすぐに大勢のナカウリ（ウエイター、たいていは女性）のうちの一人がやって来て、にこやかにあなたの脚元にひれ伏す。そして、季節に応じてベルベットか皮の座布団とtabakobonを差し出す。煙草盆の中には磁器製の火鉢があることに気づくだろう。それはパイプに火を付けたり、また小さな竹筒のようなものは吸い殻を落とすためのものである。

　ナカウリの彼女は「おあがんなさい（おがりください）」という言葉とともに、そっと優雅にお茶を供する。

（補足）

　はじめてみる単語がたくさんあります。しかし、日本人には馴染のある寄席風景で何を説明しているかがある程度わかっているので、いくらかはなるほどなとおもいつつ読み進めます。

「spittoon」は辞書に「たんつぼ」とありました。吸殻入れのはずです。でも・・・。
